Hand Embroidering My Way

I'm sure I break all the rules with my sewing - but that has always been my way. Never read instruction until I have to and only if what I am doing doesn't work out. I have done two dress making courses in my life including drafting patterns and tailoring, but never worked in the field. I only worked out what I wanted or should have down with my career last year and it is a bit too late now (costume design for film if you interested). In addition I have never had a quilting lesson in my life so don't look too closely. Anyway to the problem at hand. Hand Embroidery of letters. I prefer not to use a hoop although some people do - I like to hold the fabric loosly in my hands but it can go wonky alternatively if you are using a hoop don't stretch your fabric too tight especially if you fabric is cut on the bias.

Step 1

Get a piece of paper and draw on the size and shape of the thing you are embroidering

2. Using a computer or draw by hand design your lettering.
3. Arrange lettering on the paper, use some lines along the centre for easy alignment of your writing.

4. Draw the same shape on tissue paper as in step one and trace the lettering

5. Turn the tissue over and make sure you can read it from the back, if not, hold it up to a window and trace it in backwards letter

6. Pin tracing paper in place on the back of your block making sure all the lines line up and the writing is reversed

7. Start Sewing in back stitch. Anchor the cotton in a seam or similar and start from the back one stitch from the end of the letter

8. put the needle through to the front, this is the only tricky bit the needle from the front must come back through at the end of the letter.

9. you have made your first stitch, now put the needle into the back 2 stitches from the end of the letter.

10. put the needle into the hole at the end of the first stitch

11. make your next stitch - by following the lettering on the tissue paper. on the front you always put your needle back down into the end of the previous stitch like normal backstitch

12 . So each time you make a stitch from the back, put the needle back down the hole of the previous stitch - then you will get one continuous line of stitching.

I have had some requests for a clearer pattern picture for Harrys face - especially the eyes. Anyway I have prepared this - it doesn't have any numbers on it but you should be able to see how the eyes are constructed more easily. With the eyes you always work from the pupils out, iris, whites, eyebrows etc. Email me if you need further help.

harry potter quilt

I have decided I should not use technology - it doesn't really like me. Recently my computer died and all my precious files were transferred to an external hard drive. Need I go on - while in the process of transferring the files to my new computer my external hard drive also died (despite being checked by my computer techie the week before and being given the all clear). Luckily I saved all my photos music and family videos, unfortunately I lost all my quilt patterns and photos. Thank god for paper copies as I have all my Harry Potter patterns in a folder - albeit most of them are in my original hand drawn stage but I suppose that is better than nothing. After seeing Deathly Hallows part 1 last night I am inspired to get on and finish my 2 matching Harry Potter Quilts for my kids - the process might just be a bit slower now. Wish me luck.

Well here is the final final Ginny Weasley, this is my third attempt and I am happy at last - the others 2 definitely had something wrong with them and I was never happy. If you do however want the patterns for the earlier versions I can post them for you - just let me know.

Rita Skeeter is half sewn so look out for here in the next couple of days. I will also be loading other patterns when I have time - which is not now as I am off to work - groan.

This is my final Kreacher. I added the locket by hand - I really liked the way it turned out - my daughter said the S on it looks like a snake. I used a grey batik for his clothes so they look extra grimy. It's still really cold here - I have been wearing a scarf in the house every day.

I have posted Ofenjen a lot of my portrait patterns - if you want any desperately let one of us know and we can provide for you. Snape is next then Mcgonogall. Off to work now - groan...

It's the school holidays here in Sydney and it has rained every day. The children have been slothing around in their pyjamas and I have been sewing every day. Here is Bellatrix #2 and Tonks. Lupin is half done and will be finished tomorrow. I might not have finished my quilt top but I am ploughing on regardless. I have my sewing machine set up in the lounge so I can watch dvd's as I sew and drink many cups of tea.

Well finally I can upload pictures again I don't know what the hell was wrong before.

Anyway down to business, here is Scabbers. A big thank you to Mary Groesbeck for testing the pattern for me. I think we all agree he turned out well. You probably can't notice the missing toe - its on the foot closest to his nose. Ofenjen will be uploading the pattern soon but if you want it sooner drop me a line.

I also have the following patterns available for testing - Kreacher, Molly's Knitting, Dobby's Sock, Dumbledores Grave, Wizard Money, Unbreakable Vow, Hufflepuff Cup, Molly's Cardigan.

I hope you like them, if there are any patterns you want me to do let me know - I am feeling very creative of late and have been designing like crazy - I have Ron, Luna, Dumbledore and Moody ready to stitch - just need 5 minutes to get started.

today i am posting two of the interesting female characters from harry potter. the books have such wonderful female characters. fleur is in her school uniform including her hat so not much of her hair is showing. I therefore decided to use sliver lame for her hair to make it stand out and it does. myrtle is all in shades of blue and grey. you can't see in the photo but i went a little crazy and all the pieces of myrtle have silver organza layered over the top to give her extra ghosty shimmer. the background doesn't have the overlay so myrtle really pops out of her block - i couldn't be happier.

I am flying now - I want this quilt done. I am excited to be making such progress. I have also finished Fleur and Myrtle is half sewn, stay tuned for those two. Dumbledore, Moody and Neville will be done soon. I think I need 50 in total to satisfy my children - I tried to cull the number but they insisted all were necessary. Going to bed now - looking forward to a sewing day tomorrow after working today. Hopefully Myrtle will be done tomorrow - it takes longer as I have to do two of everything - lucky I only have two children.

Something new at last

Well I have been very very busy of late and not in a good way. Well some of it is in a good way but a lot of it involved work stuff and school stuff. I had numerous meetings last week for my children's band and tonight we have the band AGM - I am the treasurer so yet another presentation - groan.

Amidst the yucky stuff has been some really exciting stuff - I have been working on the decorations for my daughters graduation dance. It is under the sea theme. I am covering a big blow up shark with silver sequins and I have made 3 octopus's/octopi covered in sequins of green, purple and green fabric/purple sequins. I have made a big cutout of humpback whale, killer whale, manta ray, dolphin and a scuba diver which I have painted. I haven't even told you about the table decorations. Anyway more about that later - I will post photos when I am done.

I did manage to make some squares for my Harry Potter quilt. I have done Harry, Hermione, Ron and Voldy. I have posted Voldemort first. I hope you like him - he is the first portrait pattern I drew straight from my head which is pretty amazing for me as I am generally better at copying rather than drawing.

Let me know what you think or if you want the pattern which of course I haven't finished drawing up. Jen if you want to post to Tuesday photos let me know. He is a lot easier to make than most of my other portrait blocks.

Off to get the kids ready for school and then a whole day of craft - yay

these are some of my applique blocks for my harry potter quilt - I haven't worked out the final design but at the moment Harry will be in the middle with the other portrait blocks radiating out from him in a plus sign design then the rest will be the applique blocks and in the spaces where they don't fit together well will be novelty prints of spiders, pumpkins, jelly beans, insects etc. I almost forgot the most important part - both my children want one so I am doing 2 at once - yes I know - "mental that one"
